What We Are Reading

Books were a massive part of my childhood. I have a lot of memories of being curled up in bed, engrossed in a children’s novel, begging for five more minutes before lights out. I am very grateful to my mother for being such an advocate of bed time reading and I am trying to pass on that same routine to my own daughter.

That said, the world is a different place now and with a tv, an iPad, a laptop and two iphones in our household (compared to a black and white, two channel tv in 1980’s Ireland!) I think it is going to be a hard task trying to encourage Aoife to pick up a book in the years to come.

Recipe: Chorizo Cauliflower Rice

cauliflower rice

Food is a big part of our family life. We spend a considerable amount of time not just eating, but talking about food and planning our next meal! At the start of this year I decided to switch to a low carb way of eating. Although I initially starting eating this way to lose weight for our wedding, the health benefits have been so noticeable that I have decided to keep it up, albeit a bit less strictly. I now aim to eat low carb 80% of the time (a girl needs her wine and chocolate fixes after all) and so some, but not all, of the recipes I share here will be low carb.

Thanks to diets such as Atkins and Dukan there is a perception that low carbers are riddled with scurvy and clogged arteries and live on a diet of three Full English fry ups a day. Sustainable low carb eating involves not only a substantial amount of fruit and veg, but realistic alternatives to pasta, rice and other high carb staples. One of the most surprising low carb finds for me has been cauliflower and its versatility. I absolutely love cauliflower rice and this is my recipe where I jazz it up with some chorizo and veg.

Introducing City To Sticks

Hello and thanks for stopping by my blog. I’m Ciara, I’m 31 and I live in a village in mid Kent. I’ve written a more substantial bio in All About Me so pop over to that page to learn a little more about me and my family. I’m very excited to have an outlet to get down in words the conversations that I usually have with myself in my head (when you spend the majority of your day with a 2 year old you tend to talk to yourself a lot – or is that just me?!)

A recent convert to the iPhone I am slowly becoming an Instagram addict and I think my most recent pictures sum up my favourite things just perfectly:

  • pretty packaging
  • food
  • photos and momentos
  • wine; and
  • shoes!

Hopefully I’ll see you back here soon!
